I’m grateful to live in a country where an African American has a significant chance of being President of the United States

Well since we are the only country with African Americans that would make sense.

But on a serious note, the contributions of Americans who were the descendants of chattel slaves are far larger than Obama (after all Obama’s African ancestry arrived in the US in the 60s).

Actually Obama’s White mother provides his deep history as an American, and thus giving him the heritage ALL American Presidents have had-ancestry that can be traced to the colonial period. Her side of the family lived in the original thirteen colonies.

I think there needs to be a greater recognition that many Americans of African descent can trace our American ancestry to original thirteen colonies. Without the presence of FREE labor the capital investments that made it possible for millions of immigrants from Europe to enter the United States to work in the mid- to late 19th century would not have been possible. Also, the African American experience laid the foundations for an America that would be open to those born and immigrated through the passage of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the Constitution, as well as, the passage of the Civil Rights Acts.

As an American who is descendant of chattel slavery I am upset, to say the least, to hear comments about Obama’s presidency being “historical” considering the long and distinguished history millions of descendants of African slaves have played in shaping the modern nation of the United States. It bothers me because candidates like Obama have done little to recognize, that his father would not have even been able to enjoy many of the comforts of this nation without the experience of Americans who had the audacity to believe that “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” was a right ALL Americans, and those that wished to partake in this experiment.

I would like to suggest a wonderful article on race and the United States, by the distinguished American author Tim Wise “Uh-Obama: Racism, White Voters and the Myth of Color-Blindness” http://www.lipmagazine.org/~timwise/Obama.html

    absolute nonsense.

Obama is black man who would have been castrated by the KKK and sprayed with fire hoses by the police. You cannot minimize the importance of what he represents simply because his heritage doesn’t go back to the plantations.

white man - white woman = white baby
white man - black woman = black baby
black man - white woman = black baby
black man - black woman = black baby

Why do people have to be so ignorant. We are all people, if I prick you, you will bleed red and the same goes for me, I will bleed red also. Let’s get past the color of the skin and get to the matter of the heart. Obama is here to make a change for the better. We as Americans need to embrace one another no matter what color we are, we are all in this mess together. At the end of the day, if the world were to end today, we all go down together. It will not matter what color you are, we will all perish. So let’s let it go and embrace one another.
